Israel frees 500 to save peace talks

Israel began releasing more than 500 Palestinian prisoners to pressure the PLO to resume peace talks. The PLO called the move cosmetic and demanded greater security for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. About 300 more prisoners were to be released by week’s end as Rabin proposed concessions, including unarmed international observers.

Accuser withdraws suit clears Cardinal Bernardin

Steven Cook, 34, withdrew a $10 million sexual abuse suit against Cardinal Bernardin in Cincinnati claiming fading memories and asked for dismissal. Bernardin said he is totally vindicated and denied any deal, while physicist professor Richard Schwarzlose noted fair coverage of the case. Cook revealed a positive HIV test in 1990 and said he is dying of AIDS.
