US F-16s enforcing airspace restrictions over Bosnia engaged six Bosnian Serb jets on a bombing mission. After warning them, air support authorized strikes. Four Serb planes were shot down, two escaped.
President Clinton said every attempt was made to avoid shooting down Bosnian Serb aircraft but NATO warnings were ignored. He noted no prior fixed wing violations by fighters, stressed risk of air-to-air engagement, and described the action as NATO led under Deny Flight with U.N. no-fly enforcement.
In Bosnia a first NATO air action under its no fly zone, two U S F 16s downed four Serb aircraft after they bombed near Novi Travnik. Two Serb planes escaped as UN relief flights were halted and USS Saratoga paused port call in Trieste. Frontline pilots reported bomb run and ground explosions with no U S casualties.
In Bakersfield California Mercy Hospital evacuated its emergency room as staff reported dizziness and breathing trouble after exposure to fumes from an ailing 44 year old woman. Paramedics transported her Saturday. a breathing tube was used and a chemical odor was detected. The incident echoes the Riverside case of Gloria Ramirez, with six staff members hospitalized and two still under care.

Israel announced new restrictions on settlers and pledged 1000 Palestinian prisoner releases. Arafat called it insufficient.
