A 5.5 magnitude earthquake centered near Upland California shook San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties for up to 15 seconds causing shattered windows rockslides and millions in damage. No serious injuries were reported. Pomona and nearby cities declared local emergencies and more than 100 buildings were deemed unsafe. Aftershocks of 2.5 or greater were logged within seven hours and warnings for further shakes persisted.
A 5.5 magnitude quake struck San Bernardino County near Upland at 3 43 p m. It occurred in a minor fault system at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Seismologist Jim Mori of the USGS notes the Transverse Range Frontal Faults system nearby. No major damage reported. LAPD opened its emergency operations center to monitor the event.
