Syracuse papers step up recycling drive
Beginning Sunday recycling becomes law in the county to keep 93 tons of waste out of landfills. The Syracuse Newspapers publish Herald Journal Herald American and The Post Standard use about 80 tons daily and have long practiced recycling. They separate waste paper at Clinton Square before sending it to Garden State Paper Co. in Garfield New Jersey for pulping. Since 1989 old newspapers have yielded newsprint, with about 26 tons picked up weekly returning roughly 23 tons of recycled material. Current recycled newsprint accounts for 11 percent of the 28,000 tons used yearly, with plans to reach 40 to 60 percent in coming years as new recycling facilities expand capacity.
