Housing plan falls together on scattered-site units

Murphy outlines a varied design with backyards patios and basements for scattered-site public housing. Ghosh warns of front-yard parking park-land questions and minority contractor roles while Native Americans from the Near West Side press for access. SHA, a semi independent federal funded authority, will screen applicants and police records, with 500 families on the wait list. Residents fear parachuted projects on Midland Avenue and possible site changes. Turnover remains low as rent boosts and heat costs bite while the scattered-site grant nears exhaustion under the Reppan administration.

Lipe Railway contract sparks worker pay concerns

Union members voiced dissatisfaction with terms allowing management to shuffle staff and remove incentive clauses. Several expect to lose up to 5000 dollars in gross pay from the loss of work incentives while some claim only a modest wage raise if any. Emmerth cited limited member understanding and a general meeting to explain the agreement. The tentative pact ends a dispute after a June 18 contract expiration and a 140 41 vote rejection. Lipe Railway, a Salina based maker of clutches and bearings, employs about 900 people.
