Pastor Named Moderator for Congregational Churches
CLEVELAND 56 year old minister and former World War I veteran Dr Vere V Loper was elected moderator of the Congregational Christian Churches for two years at the biennial meeting. He heads First Congregational Church Berkeley California and will be installed at the closing session. He defeated Dr L Wendell Fifield of Brooklyn by 406 to 7299 votes. Loper urged reconciliation amid merger debates aimed at forming the United Church of Christ with about 2 million members. He stressed unity without breaking fellowship. He succeeds Miss Helen Kenyon of New York, the first woman moderator. The vote reflected ongoing tensions over merger and church unity.
