Career diplomat John S. Service testified publicly before the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee denying McCarthy’s accusation that he aided Chinese Communists. He defended his role in the Amerasia affair, stating innocence and cooperation to solve the matter, while recounting details of the case and subsequent prosecutions. The hearing attracted large crowds despite the late decision to go public.
President Truman said the United States cannot afford a 70 group air force and that budget constraints will determine actual size. He noted the pending legislation sets only a ceiling, with the Air Force size dependent on Congress appropriations, currently about 48 first line groups.

Morristown Tennessee saw a violent strike at the Enka plant as gunfire wounded three workers during a shift change. State safety officials and highway patrol dispatched 70 armed troopers with gas bombs to disperse strikers gathered at the gate while reports noted barricaded entrances and scattered shelling with one man fatally shot and others wounded.
Patrolman Robert Barens pursued a motorcycle at 60 mph after a 19 block chase ending with a woman diner on Chester Avenue. She said she was trying to get out of the way while under the influence of beer and was issued a court summons for driving without a license.

The plan centers on a coal steel merger under an overarching authority with power to enforce its dictates though Britain with the largest coal output balks at ceding control. France proposes the authority be answerable to a federal parliament with annual public reviews and a yearly closed session, as per Jean Monnet.
Federal District Court set aside today to hear Judith Coplon plea for a new trial based on newly discovered evidence. Leonard Boudin, former counsel for New York representatives, to argue for the motion on behalf of Coplon.
In Cooper Hill Missouri a burglar entered a shop during a fishing trip and ripped a sale but left empty handed after an apparent error. Authorities describe the incident as a bungled break in with several people nearby.
Monotonous Gatexxal Point s police chief Ernz Charon submitted his badge today citing burnout from long shifts and constant lawsuits. He described years of 24 hour strain and repeated legal challenges as unsustainable.
A vandalism spree last night damaged a camp area with smashed trees and broken property. A vehicle smashed the site around 1:45 AM triggering a call for help. police and responders were dispatched as the suspect fled the scene.
