Yellow rain debate fuels arms talks over bees or fungus

The yellow rain controversy centers on whether the toxins found in Southeast Asia were manufactured chemical weapons or natural mycotoxins produced by fungus. Scientists clash over evidence, with supporters of U S claims citing tricothecenes and victims, while skeptics question pollen carriers and bee droppings.

Meselson warns against biological warfare role in policy

Harvard geneticist Matthew Meselson recalls going to the CIA in 1963 to learn what others did in biological weapons. He later urged the U S to exit the biological warfare business while criticizing State Department claims of Soviet toxin use in Southeast Asia. He testifies before Congress and lectures at the Pentagon on chemical weapons. He first heard of yellow rain in 1981 and calls for conclusive scientific proof to guide world opinion and policy. An associate says Meselson is driven by high motives and fears conservatives may exploit yellow rain to undermine arms control.
