Judge James J. Barrett Dies at 79 in Syracuse
James J. Barrett, 79, a practicing attorney and former presiding judge of the State Court of Claims, died this morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a heart attack last night. A Syracuse native and Democrat, he served on various public posts including County Judge, deputy state attorney general, and president of the Common Council. He retired from the bench in 1947 after about 20 years and maintained offices in the Empire Building.
