McGovern Pushes Mondale Unity After Hart Contention
Former senator George S. McGovern urged Democratic delegates to back Walter Mondale at the convention and warned against bitter rules battles with Gary Hart. McGovern, who dropped out last March, said he freed his 23 delegates to vote for Mondale and predicted most would. He suggested a Mondale-Hart ticket could win in the fall and noted no interest in the vice presidency. He also cautioned Mondale against shifting toward the ideological center.
