About a dozen truckers joined a downtown convoy in Syracuse this afternoon to protest high fuel prices and a low speed limit. Organizers said signs denounced rising costs. yesterday protesters blocked a gas pump and slowed traffic on the Thruway.

Carter proposes limited national health plan uniting Medicare Medicaid

President Carter proposes a phased national health care plan merging Medicare and Medicaid into a single federally administered system. The first year would cost 23 to 25 billion dollars, expanding Medicaid coverage to more poor Americans and funding catastrophic illness protection with out-of-pocket limits near 2,500 dollars. Employers would fund at least 75 percent of private premiums, and universal free care would apply to pregnant women and infants under one. The plan envisions private insurers processing claims while the government sets rules, with added physician fee schedules and publicizing physician adherents.

John Wayne dies after cancer battle at UCLA Medical Center

Hollywood icon John Wayne died at 5:39 p.m. after a long cancer fight at UCLA Medical Center. Surrounded by seven children, he refused some pain drugs to be with his family as his public image of a fearless fighter endured.
