Chappell & Sons Inc. department stores, founded in 1895, have long been run by Chappell family members. As of April five Chappell relatives work in various roles from supervisor to chair, while nonfamily member Sherlock becomes chief executive and sole stock owner among non-Chapels.
Chappell's, led by Charles Chappell II and his son, remains rooted in family control while expanding to eight stores and planning two new openings. The firm preserves its tradition with 17 of 18 stockholders descendants, and outsiders join as long serving staff. A shift in leadership shows non family executive Sherlock rising to president while family stays as governance core.
