Salmon Return to Connecticut River After Restocking Effort
The Atlantic salmon returned to the Connecticut River last week for the first time since industrial pollution and overfishing drove them out more than a century ago. A 33 inch 11 pound specimen caught at Brockway Island channel by Russell Staplin of Saybrook was turned in for a $25 reward. The eight year restocking program, started in 1967 by the U S Fish and Wildlife Service with regional partners, aims to restore spawning runs as fish have already appeared in Maine rivers.
