New York June 9 Gov Averell Harriman declared himself an active candidate for the Democratic nomination for President. He made the announcement today signaling his bid and campaign for the Democratic race.
Harry L. Whitney Jr., a 1952 Syracuse University graduate and U.S. Air Force veteran, was sentenced to six years in a Madrid court for insult to the state. The American embassy said it would seek consular help. Whitney had gone to Seville to pursue bullfighting and admitted using a strong word during a traffic dispute.
Police report safe opened with a knock and theft of about 5400 from the Enay Bargaik Center at 44 Gifford Street in Sidney Remino Quincy Massachusetts. Investigators say 3000 in bills and 2400 in coins plus a check were taken, with 3400 missing from the safe and a grill and large bat found nearby. Detectives note the entry point was a drilled or forced opening and the crime occurred after 9:15 pm.
New York reports premature triplets in fair condition after two transfusions of their entire blood supply in a case described as unprecedented. Doctors at Mt. Sinai Hospital say the transfusions were to treat a suspected severe immune or jaundice condition in the infant girls and boy. The Peyton family of New Milford, Conn., is connected to the case with the babies weighing from under four pounds to 5 pounds 11 ounces.
President Eisenhower endured a two hour emergency operation for an obstruc tion in the small intestine. Surgeons reported the ailment non malignant and the President awake, joking, and in good morale. Doctors expect a lengthy recovery over the next several days with no heart involvement confirmed.
