Niagara Falls Rockfall Kills Man at Hydroelectric Station
A historic Niagara Gorge rockfall killed Richard A. Draper, 39, of Lewiston, and sent over 40 Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. workers scrambling to safety as two of the Scheell kopf Hydroelectric Station's three sections were crushed by debris. The disaster wiped out 360,000 kilowatts and prompted a loss estimate well over 50 million dollars. The incident followed seepage and reports of earth movement near Prospect Point, with officials seeking the cause as emergency crews battled to control floods and secure the plant.
