Costello Named Labor Official for Syracuse District
Former Mayor Frank J. Costello becomes assistant industrial commissioner for the Syracuse district with a $9,000 annual salary. The appointment, announced after a testimonial dinner honoring Joseph D. Teatom, follows Teatom’s retirement and marks a shift in labor management relations noted as strong under Teatom. Local labor leaders and business officials attended, with speeches from Mayor Gargoran, clergy, and other industrial commissioners.

Teachers Ask Earlier Raise in Syracuse Education Plan
The Syracuse Teachers Association urged the Board of Education to grant an early pay raise for elementary teachers. They requested the $163 extra for eight years of service start July 2, arguing state mandated $500 annual raises are funded by Albany from July 1 to Jan 1, and city funds should begin earlier. Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson also pressed to place all 30-year veterans at the top step of the salary schedule in a letter to Percy Hughes Jr.
