Judge rejects effort to end Mohawk suit in New York
A federal judge in Syracuse denied a broad set of motions to dismiss the Mohawk Indians 12 000 acre land claim in Northern New York. The ruling removes 144 acres from the Canadian side tribe a key land parcel and reinforces earlier decisions. The suit, filed in 1982 by the Canadian St Regis Band and joined by the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs seeks voiding of 1816 1845 land deals arguing they violated post 1790 treaty orders. The focus areas include Cross Islands Barnhart Island and a six mile square near the Grasse River.
