In Thunder Bay Ontario six people perished when a three story brick house converted to apartments caught fire early today. Firefighters halted the roof collapse from hindering rescue efforts as authorities investigated the blaze.
Two bank robbery suspects fled the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan last night using knotted bedsheets tied to a third floor balcony. One inmate was captured about 30 minutes later. the second remained at large the next day, police said.

A 19 year old Nedrow man Robert L Ramsden faces second degree manslaughter and two counts of driving while intoxicated after a late night one car crash on Gibson Road the Onondaga Indian Reservation. Teammate Craig S Webster 19 of Tanner Road died at the scene while Ramsden was treated for injuries and arraigned in Geddes Town Justice court with bail set at 2500. Webster, a greenskeeper at Tanner Valley Golf Course, is survived by his parents a sister a brother and other relatives with services pending.
In Melbourne, doctors performed a balloon soprostomy on Stephen, the world s first test tube twin born with a blue heart condition. A catheter was inserted to inflate a balloon in his chest to stabilize the vessels until a future corrective operation. Amanda remains in excellent health with her mother at Queen Victoria Hospital.
ernest W. Lefever denies charges in a resignation letter to President Reagan and withdraws his name from consideration as the United States human rights chief after the Senate committee labeled him unfit. He cites suspicion and character attacks and notes his gratitude for the nomination to be assistant secretary of state for human rights. The dispute centered on his past remarks about tolerating abuses in allied countries and his Nestle connections.
