The House Ethics Committee voted 12 to 0 to launch a full-scale investigation into Rep. Wayne Hays over allegations his secretary Elizabeth Ray was hired as his mistress. Chairman John Flynt said the inquiry could start as early as tomorrow with Justice Department help sought.
An explosion near Plymouth Rock in Plymouth Massachusetts caused only powder burns and did not move the granite landmark. Police said dynamite likely caused the hole in the sand three feet long and seven inches deep. no injuries or arrests reported. FBI and ATF joined state police and a local chief investigated with no confirmed group linked to the blast.
At Lindsey Air Base in Wiesbaden west Germany terrorists set fire to two trucks early today. No injuries were reported at the air station. A day earlier a bombing at Frankfurt injured sixteen people, fifteen Americans, at the Army V Corps headquarters.
The New York Senate approved a one time 36 million dollar transfer to City University of New York to avert a crisis and resume classes. Tuition for 250000 undergraduates would begin in September and fund an estimated 135.5 million annually. Critics warn the measure is a band aid and Assembly likely won’t pass it.
Albany NY tele phone customers will face higher charges starting August 1 as the utility increases state approved service fees totaling 46.9 million dollars. Residential basic monthly charges rise eight cents while business charges increase 14 cents. Examples show Syracuse residents and firms paying higher flat rate and message rate charges.
