Grim job outlook for 1983 graduates in early spring

The College Placement Council reports seniors received half as many job offers in March 1983 as a year earlier. Yet offers are snapped up by those who receive them. Average starting salaries show small gains across fields. Petroleum engineers top $31 000, chemical engineers about $27 300, accounting near $18 700. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts more graduates than available first jobs with as many as one in five finding none.
