National Weather Service forecaster at Hancock Airport notes cloudy conditions, a 30 percent shower chance tonight, and a low around 50 degrees with southwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Tomorrow should turn partly cloudy with morning showers and a high near 60 to 65 degrees.
Boston authorities say a 39 year old Iraqi born man Said Ali who had taught Arabic studies at Loyola University Chicago attempted to hijack a Saudi Airlines jumbo jet en route from Saudi Arabia to New York. The plane was diverted to Boston and the hijacker was subdued with no injuries reported.
Kalamazoo based Walter Bergman 83 seeks $1 million in a suit alleging the FBI failed to prevent civil rights activists’ beating outside Anniston and in Birmingham Alabama on May 14 1961. Judge Richard Enslen ruled Bergman may pursue damages. trial will set the amount.

About 800 United Steelworkers members voted to give Colt Industries 30 days to negotiate a new three year contract while continuing June work at existing benefits. Local 1277 waits until June 17 and Local 2716 until June 30 to strike legally if no agreement. The union seeks a buyer for the Solvay plant and pledges to stay on the job during talks.
Isidore Zimmerman, a 66 year old Queens doorman, was awarded $1 million for wrongful conviction and 24 years in prison. The Court of Claims judge said the sum properly compensates for loss of earnings, medical expenses, liberty, civil rights, reputation and mental anguish.
A 20 year old post office worker fell 200 feet to his death from the Kensico Reservoir Dam in Westchester County. Anthony Ferone of Thornwood, a Thornwood post office employee, was pronounced dead at the Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla at 10 31 a.m.

Auburn-Columbian Rope Co. President Peter Metcalf says the move to the Sunbelt has not solved the company's economic ills. The firm, facing downturn and foreign competition in cordage, still contends with challenges that preceded the Auburn plant closure. Metcalf notes the outcome remains uncertain.
Metcalf explains that a national recession and abroad competition pushed rope maker to relocate from Auburn after a prior plan by former management. Firms like Wall Rope Works and Tubbs Cordage also moved south to lower costs and taxes, with Guntown, Mississippi chosen after consultant guidance.
