Baby boom fuels rise in mentally ill youths says health expert
Washington based health authority Dr. Bert Pepper notes a new generation of severely mentally ill young adults in their late 20s and 30s. Described as rootless and unemployed, many avoid treatment and blame professionals. Survey of 900 Rockland County patients finds 57 percent schizophrenic and 7 percent manic depressive, with others having personality, behavior, or substance disorders. Pepper warns for every dysfunctional young adult seen, two to ten more remain undiagnosed in families or on streets.
