Washington AP outlines how major features of Reagan tax legislation would cut taxes for typical earners. It notes the final amounts depend on each family’s finances and that a Senate House conference will decide remaining details.
Washington AP reports House Rules Committee chair Richard Bolling opposes any removal of the $122 monthly minimum Social Security benefit. He may delay final budget action to force restoration, while colleagues push measures to preserve current and future recipients amid a $35 billion spending cut.
The plan ties withholding to inflation, reducing 1985 tax liability for a $15,000 earner by $526 and offering joint-filer deductions of 5 to 10 percent up to 30,000. It targets higher earners with broad relief, expands retirement contributions, and cuts estate and corporate taxes to spur investment and employment.
President Reagan celebrated a Senate Intelligence Committee finding no basis for removal of CIA Director William Casey and hailed the day as a great victory. He spoke with House rivals including Thomas O’Neill Jr and Dan Rostenkowski, then thanked supporters Robert Michel and Barber Conable, expressing intent to move forward without gloating.

About 6,500 watched the West beat the South in basketball, 2,500 attended high school volleyball, and crowds filled War Memorial hockey as Great Lakes defeated Central. Syracuse earned early testing ground for a rotating festival policy and volunteers numbered nearly 3,000.
