Experimental seven story building withstands quakes in Tsukuba
A joint Japan United States project in Tsukuba tested a reinforced seven story building against nine months of simulated earthquakes. The team of 30 engineers, led by James K. Wright, reported the structure survived without collapse, suggesting reinforced designs could save lives and property in cities like Tokyo and San Francisco. The $2 million study concluded further tests would continue in September and October.

Will krill help feed the crowded world
In London and Antarctic waters researchers assess krill as a potential food source for a growing global population. Despite its abundance, perishability and high harvest costs limit direct human use, with krill meal likely to dominate animal feed while future tech may cut fishing energy needs. Major players include USSR and Japan, with Poland entering and other nations experimenting.
