Tonight will be fair with a low in the mid-50s and NW winds 5 to 15 mph. Tomorrow’s high should reach 80 to 85 with a near zero rain chance tonight and about 10 percent tomorrow. Eastern Onondaga saw light rain yesterday as farmers complain of dry conditions. Weekend remains unsettled with variable clouds and scattered showers before the fair weather ends.
In Steuben County two convicted prisoners from Buffalo overpowered guards and escaped in Erie County deputies uniforms and car. Richard Santori, 30, and Alan Lighten, 19, prompting an all points search by State Police and deputies from Erie and Steuben counties.
Writers Guild of America members approve a four year contract by a near unanimous vote in New York and Hollywood ending a three month walkout. The deal secures a 52 to 57 percent rise in minimums, a 2 percent share of producers revenue for pay TV scripts, retroactive to March 1, with fall programming expected to be staggered and delayed.
Rose Kinosian, a 70 year old widow, feeds and houses a bluejay named Johnny and returns it to the woods daily. Wildlife officials say keeping a bluejay is illegal without a permit, but the case remains unsettled as the bird appears to choose freedom each day.
Washington AP. The Office of Budget and Management raises the 1982 spending forecast to 704.8 billion, about 10 billion higher than Reagan’s planned 695.3 billion, due to rising borrowing costs from persistently high interest rates. Inflation is seen easing faster than prior estimates, with unemployment near 7 percent through 1982.
Secretary of Labor Raymond Donovan plans to address both sides in New York to urge a settlement of the 34 day old baseball labor dispute. Federal mediator Kenneth Moffett says talks are close to a settlement as Donovan weighs urging Washington meetings if no accord by Friday.
CIA spy chief William J Casey confronts a federal judge ruling he knowingly misled investors in a late 1960s venture while Max Hugel resigns as deputy director after disclosures of insider information. John Stein nominated to replace Hugel as details of a 1968 farming venture suit surface. White House backs Casey.
A 15 month old Jody Powers abducted from New York Hospital was spotted by a commuter with a woman matching her mother at Stamford station. The child was taken to Stamford Hospital and the woman was held for questioning by New York authorities amid an ongoing abuse investigation. Authorities identified the child by photo and description. no local charges were filed.
