Generally fair, mainly clear tonight in Syracuse with a low near 60. Tomorrow partly cloudy with a high near 85. Saturday and Sunday look dry with daytime highs between 80 and 85, continuing pleasant conditions.
The Labor Department reported 416,000 first time claims for unemployment benefits in the week ended June 25, up 16,000 from the revised 400,000. The number receiving regular benefits in the week ended June 18 fell to 3,327,000, down 17,000 from the prior week, with total regular benefits covering 26 weeks.
Norris Eugene Moss of Houston was arrested on an Milam County warrant after a series of church and Masonic hall arson attempts. Investigators say the 34 year old car salesman claimed he was Jesus Christ and Julius Caesar as residents alerted authorities following four church firebombings in Gause. Molotov cocktails were used in the Monday and Tuesday blazes on seven small churches and the Masonic hall.
Albany announces last night's daily numbers game winner with the drawn numbers 294. The Win Four number drawn was 1003.

Troop killings and charred bodies prompt a vigil by 160 North Americans protesting U.S. policy aiding the counterrevolutionaries against the Sandinista government.

Washington AP report notes investigators pursue claims that 1980 Reagan campaign workers used sexual favors to obtain Carter White House briefing materials. Rep. Albosta says leaks point to possible Carter camp intimacies, while Edwin Meese denies any such plan. The Washington Post adds Daniel Jones cited a White House mole.
