The Jan 27 1983 Mubarak visit to the White House signals renewed talks with President Reagan. Officials described a cooperative agenda on Middle East diplomacy and regional security, with both leaders pressing for stability amid regional tensions.
In Montreal the Levesque government says it will press charges against striking public workers as 90,000 teachers join a day-old walkout. Union leaders aim to rally 250,000 of Quebec’s 325,000 public employees to join by February amid wage cuts of up to 20 percent for half the staff under three-year contracts.
Oklahoma State Rep. Walter E. Hill said in jest he might lease the Panhandle to neighboring states to ease the budget crisis and has drafted secession legislation. He suggested a vote if residents wish to strike out on their own, acknowledging the remark as tongue in cheek. A separate North East report notes new goggle migraine linked to swimming.
President Reagan’s 1984 tax and spending proposals draw cross party resistance in Congress amid a weaker economy. Senate Republicans demand deeper defense cuts. House Democrats led by Speaker O’Neill pledge a Democratic budget, opposing indexing and the 10 percent tax cut for higher earners.
A monster Pacific storm battered the West Coast with 30 foot waves and heavy rain, killing seven and forcing evacuations. Power outages hit 100000 homes in California while highways closed and rivers flooded, as a second storm loomed inland toward Wyoming and Montana. A mudslide near Redding killed a county employee. Offshore, 80 to 100 mph winds in southern Oregon interrupted a hiker search. Near San Francisco Bay, tides and mudslides disrupted life and transport. Authorities warned urgent action for those near creeks and rivers.
Heavy snow slowed travel and caused numerous crashes from Kansas to Missouri with two deaths reported in Missouri. An 18 year old woman died when her twin sister’s car collided with another near Sedalia. A truck driver perished near Boonville as his vehicle slid down an embankment. Schools closed in northwest Missouri as up to six inches fell in several towns.
Yesterday high 26 and low 14 set against normal 22 and record extremes 64 and 15 in 1916 and 1924. Humidity stacked at 70 percent yesterday and 96 percent at 8 am today.
