Bar ney Clark, 62, celebrated a birthday at Utah Medical Center with a heart shaped cake as doctors credited the artificial heart surgery six weeks ago with saving his life. He will be fed via nasal tube and unable to eat the cake. The day included singing by hospital staff and family.
Israeli leaders rejected U S Middle East envoy Philip Habib’s bid for a rapid pullout of 30 000 troops from Lebanon and warned Syria about Soviet made Sam 5 missiles. Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan pledged retaliation if Israeli planes are fired on. Those who fire at us we will fire back.
John Alfred Hall, 52, didn't flee the National Bank and Trust Co. branch he had just robed. Armed with no weapon he ordered a teller to fill a bag, called police, and waited on a couch for officers to arrive across from the south side substation. Hall admitted the act, saying he was the robber. He was a transient living in a local hotel with no money or family.
The Navy paid $18,000 for a custom-built, fire-resistant aluminum-frame couch installed in the wardroom of the destroyer Kidd. Navy officials announce a purchase investigation while noting the coach may be unique to this ship, with questions remaining about others.

After threatening with a bomb jacket and demanding flight to Afghanistan, he released about half the passengers before FBI agents moved in and one agent fired, ending the incident with the hijacker killed.
