Three hijackers force South Yemen flight to Djibouti

Three hijackers forced a Boeing 707 to land at Djibouti, wounding two passengers before surrendering. About 40 aboard. crew members escaped, others locked in the cockpit. Djibouti officials noted unclear nationality or motives. Royal Air Force jets increased patrols around the Falklands amid Argentina naval activity and possible commando raids. Argentina allegedly set Antarctic bases to threaten the Falklands with potential fighter-bomber attacks if refueled by tankers.

Steelworkers vow to fight Lackawanna plant closure

About 400 workers attended a meeting where United Steelworkers Local 2603 president Art Sambuchi said unions would launch several "bomb shells" to push Bethlehem Steel Corp to reverse its decision to end steelmaking at the Lackawanna plant by year end. He warned the plant is going down but vowed to keep up efforts with limited details.

Wall Street executive survives fall after ledge stops jump

Bruce Davis, a 38 year old Holmdel New Jersey native and assistant vice president at the New York Stock Exchange, plunged from an 11th floor Wall Street office at 2 30 pm after an apparent suicide attempt. A ledge on the eighth floor interrupted the fall saving his life. Davis suffers a broken hip and internal injuries but is listed in stable condition at St Vincent's Hospital. Police say no note was found.

Kansas lawmaker files token cut in legislators pay

Rep. Keith Farrar of Hugoton, in Topeka, introduces a bill to reduce state legislators’ daily pay from 45 to 43 dollars plus expenses. He says the move echoes public anger at Congress raising salaries and reflects tough economic times. He notes his own start pay was 10 dollars per day.

UW tunnels lure campus recluse into underworld

Bob Gruenenwald, a 6 foot 6 UW Madison man, makes his home in a maze of campus tunnels by night. Security officer Bruce Carroll says he knows the tunnels better than anyone and even helps tradesmen, replacing lights. Police have tried to seal passages, but he and students still access them by lifting sidewalk grates.
