Mortgage lending hits five year low in 1980 says S&Ls official
United States League of Savings Associations reports mortgage loans by savings and loan associations totaled 70.6 billion in 1980, the lowest since 1975. Executive VP William B. O Connell warns 1981 lending may worsen due to weak deposit growth as deposits fell to a six year low. New deposits rose 10.4 billion, down 30 percent from 15.0 billion in 1979, with six month CDs dominating. Exemption of up to 200 dollars per saver and 400 for joint filers from federal tax may encourage savers once economic conditions stabilize.
