Savings and loan mortgage lending hits five year low in 1980
The United States League of Savings Associations reports mortgage lending by S&Ls fell to 70.6 billion in 1980, the lowest since 1975, with deposits shrinking and 1981 expected to remain weak. New deposits totaled 16.5 billion, down 30 percent from 1979, as six month CDs dominated. Exemption of up to 200 dollars for individuals and 400 for joint filers on savings interest through 1982 is urged to revive deposits.
