Man held without bail in brutal beating of 2 year old

HAUPPAUGE UP I reports Andrew Brooks, 22, is jailed without bail on charges he beat his son Abram Brooks, age 2, up to 20 times and strangled him after the child took a bottle from his infant sister. Abram's body was found by his mother Gail in their North Babylon home.

Carey TV ad funding to be probed by Albany panel

Former Gov Hugh Carey's order to boost I Love New York and Made in New York ads before the November election will be reviewed by the Republican led State Senate. Sen Walter Floss says a hearing will seek to determine if funds reallocation affected ad effectiveness. Carey said he urged stronger state campaigns to counter criticism that New York was an economic backwater, a move Lehrman called an unfair use of state money aiding Cuomo.

Photographers lash out at Diana on Liechtenstein ski outing

The Sun reports photographers yelled insults at Princess Diana during a Liechtenstein ski holiday with Prince Charles. They accused her of reluctance to be photographed and called her a spoiled child while others claimed she acted like Greta Garbo. Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

Unemployed juror to be interviewed in jail murder trial

In Joliette Quebec Judge Jean Guy Boilard will allow a job interview for an unem ployed juror sequestered in the murder trial of 10 inmates charged with first degree murder in a riot at Archambault Penitentiary. Officials from a financial firm will attend with a stenographer to hear only about the job offer.

Britain Faces Obesity Crisis Says Royal College Report

The Royal College of Physicians warned Britain is a fat nation with 30 percent of adults and 5 percent of children overweight. Excess sugar and fats raise diabetes hypertension and heart risk. 60 percent of women and 30 percent of men diet at any time. Bread gains praise for fiber while chocolate and cookies are discouraged.

Protesters Fail to Stop Farm Sale in Ohio

About 750 gathered in London to witness the 191 acre Dailey farm auction. The 225000 sale to the Federal Land Bank Association followed a bid in which protesters chanted no sale no sale as Doug Dailey urged a peaceful dispersal and called for a moratorium on farm foreclosures.

Walesa denied return to Lenin shipyard in Gdansk by authorities

Solidarity leader Lech Walesa sought to resume work as an electrician at the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk but was turned away after being required to show proof he is not employed elsewhere and a regional authority statement on union finances. Security was stepped up with police outside the gates as Walesa demanded clear employment terms and his rights for working people.

Weather marked by cold, snow and storms across regions

Partly cloudy and cold tonight with easterly winds 15 to 25 mph and likely snow. Storms threaten the East with freezing temperatures over the East Coast and frost spreading to south Florida.
