China US textile talks fail quotas likely set
PEKING UP I reports negotiations between China and the United States ended in failure. Beijing warned it would react to unilateral U S quotas as Washington contemplates tightening limits on about 30 textile categories. China sold 590 million in textiles to the U S in 1981 and sought terms similar to the expired agreement. The stalled talks threaten to derail Secretary of State George Shultz's planned early February visit.

Teen Captured After Five Captives Escape In Pittsfield
A 16-year-old, unnamed, allegedly held five people hostage for 244 hours at a Downey Side juvenile halfway house in Pittsfield Massachusetts. He escaped on foot with a handgun before police captured him in neighboring Great Barrington and turned him over around 8:30 a.m. The captives, four adults and one youth, fled after a gun was tossed from a window and the youth allegedly reclaimed the weapon.

Bear Duke Returns Home After Six Days Missing
In Rosenberg Texas a 1000 pound pet bear named Duke who vanished from a 12 acre auto salvage yard last Thursday wandered back to his cage late yesterday. Owner Alvin Ohl said the hungry bear was fed three gallons of Purina dog food three cans of dog food a can of cat food and a dozen eggs. He praised Dukes resilience and noted the bear has lived with him for more than 10 years.

Heart patient dies as car crashes into New Brunswick hospital
