The LA Clippers faced a shock when star rookie Danny Manning suffered an injury that officials fear could threaten his career and alter the team’s season. Coaches and teammates expressed cautious optimism as tests are pending and Manning seeks a quick but safe return.
Sluggish state bureaucracy stalls money for the Structured Educational Support Program run by the Syracuse Urban League and Onondaga County. About 100 teens aged 14 to 18 receive weekly stipends to encourage staying in school, but gaps in state aid and delayed federal funds endanger stipends and staff salaries. Officials warn if state money does not arrive soon, some youths may quit, undermining the program’s credibility.

The Republican National Committee will cover about $25,000 in Dan Quayle’s Christmas vacation expenses. The vice president elect and his family spent 10 days in Beaver Creek, Colorado, on a skiing trip staying in a condominium. A Quayle adviser asked the committee to pay for items such as telephone and copying equipment, with two aides sharing lodging and travel costs. The Quayle spokesman said the family paid all direct lodging and travel costs themselves.
