Syracuse topped a high temperature record with 66 degrees breaking the 1930 mark of 65 as a frontal system spawns substantial statewide rainfall. Flood watches advised while rain and gusty southwest winds sweep east tonight, with tomorrow’s showers and possible snow in the north as the cold front moves through.

Berrigans on trial at General Electric plant action

In Norristown Pennsylvania UPI reports Philip and Daniel Berrigan and six other antiwar activists known as the Plowshares Eight faced trial for invading a General Electric nuclear warhead plant and damaging a nose cone. Supporters sang Give Peace a Chance as about 60 demonstrators braved fog and rain to cheer the defendants.

Jet crashes near Clark Air Base during practice run

An F-4 Phantom fighter crashed into a mountainside near Clark Air Base north of Manila during a training bombing run. Both crewmen ejected safely and were treated for minor injuries at the base hospital. The pilots were Lt. Col. Richard T. Swope of New Hartford and Capt. James A. Roy of Chattahoochee, Georgia.

IRS stay blocks release of confidential tax tapes ruling

Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist granted a temporary stay delaying release of confidential IRS computer tapes sought by Philip and Susan Long in a 12 year fight to obtain tax return information. Washington reports 178 pages of documents claiming Soviet bloc nations launched a major effort to arm leftist guerrillas in El Salvador through Cuba and Nicaragua. Woman dies in Solvay collision at Wolf and North Salina

A six year old Solvay woman Gloria Powers died from injuries after a two car crash at Wolf and North Salina streets. The other driver was charged with passing two red lights driving while intoxicated and related counts. Powers died soon after arrival at State University Hospital. The crash occurred around 7 a.m. as she traveled west on Wolf Street.
