Iran warns frontline complacency in two year war

Ayatollah Khomeini marked the fourth anniversary of his rise to power by warning that battlefield complacency could lead to defeat in Iran's war with Iraq. His message was read by his son at a Tehran ceremony as Iraq claimed a major Iranian offensive was broken in a 12 hour battle, with 1,000 Iranians surrendering.

Flowers and chocolates priced high as lovers are urged to wait

Romeos and Juliets on Long Island are warned to delay gifts as a consumer activist cites steep price hikes. A survey shows a dozen roses rising from 24.25 to 42.00 and carnations from 9.50 to 13.65 per dozen, with chocolates up about 16 percent. Leaders call end to truck strike

A Dixie storm dumped over a foot of snow from North Carolina to New Jersey. West Virginia reported up to 16 inches, cutting power to about 22 000 homes and businesses. Virginia saw 12 to 18 inches in several cities, with 14 inches in Richmond and 16 in Roanoke. Philadelphia and Baltimore markets emptied as forecasts warned of further snowfall. Alleghany County recorded 14 inches in northwest North Carolina.
