Two sets of twins are routed as homes burn following a sleet and ice event. The storm disrupts highways and causes widespread damage as families seek shelter. Local authorities warn residents to stay indoors and conserve resources while crews clear debris.
Early morning fires driven by ice coated streets forced 12 people from two homes. In the 129 S. Pleasant Ave. blaze an elderly man was rescued from a porch roof. At 501 Dewitt St. Mr and Mrs Walker Edwards and twin daughters Flora and Caroline were driven into the street. A second set of twins was led to safety through a smashed window at E Pleasant Ave office.
A two day general strike in Barlo over food shortages and unemployment ends with one dead and 25 injured. Government promised immediate ration increases and expanded jobless benefits. Strikes still possible in Reggio Calabria Costanza and Catanzaro as workers plan unified tactics.
The Weather Bureau forecast calls for snow and much colder conditions in the Syracuse area today and tonight with a low near zero to five degrees below. Snow flurries and continued cold are expected Tuesday with strong winds and a high around 44 and a low near 5.
Butter prices fell about 3 cents a pound in New York wholesale markets amid a weekend surge of Midwest receipts and higher Eastern prices. AA butter cost 76 1/2 cents, a drop of 3 1/2 cents, while A butter at 74 1/2 cents, down 3 1/2. lower grades dipped less. B type 74 1/2 cents and C 72 1/2 cents.
A foreign office spokesman said the Chinese government does not recognize Russia's right to continue occupying Dairen, Manchuria's chief port, and will assume administration of the city immediately aside from obstacles posed by Chinese Communists.

The French general staff reported Viet-Nam Nationalist troops launched heavy attacks on French positions at Namdinh, near the mouth of the River Rouge southeast of Hanoi. Vietnamese artillery shelled encircled Hanoi causing damage in the city center amid frequent patrol clashes.
The Missouri Supreme Court ordered 122 large stock fire insurance companies to pay a total of 2.09 million dollars for seeking a fraudulent settlement in a rate case tied to bribery allegations involving the late Tom Pendergast. Pendergast’s machine collapsed in 1939 after he and former state Insurance commissioner R E O Malley were jailed. Fines ranged from ten thousand dollars upward.
Gen Joseph T. Monahan predicts a 136.1 million dollar deficit for the three occupied German states in 1946. He estimates revenues will reach about 77 percent of budgeted expenditures in his monthly report.
