Diverting traffic around Adams Street monitor sparks debate

Reader Donna Spec tor questions the East Adams Street flyway diversions used to protect Onondaga County clean air status by rerouting traffic during Carrier Dome events. The 4 foot high carbon monoxide monitor at Adams and Almond sits on a concrete pad since the 1980s, near Pioneer Homes, and is feared by residents for increased congestion and exhaust. Norm Boyle of the DEC notes the monitor, placed with an EPA grant, remains tied to federal requirements. County officials say the box is poorly placed, while state officials acknowledge traffic rerouting is aimed at reducing readings under federal limits. The sports crowd last week prompted diversions around Pioneer Homes for a Crunch hockey game and an Arizona basketball game, drawing ire from residents and questions about policy. The Almond Adams site ranks seventh in Onondaga County for accident locations, per a new transportation council map.
