Lee Alexander, Syracuse’s 46th mayor from 1970 to 1985, died at 69 from lung cancer and a brain tumor. He spent 16 years in office and 51 years in federal prison for racketeering and tax evasion related to a city corruption scandal. He was indicted in 1987, pleaded guilty in 1988, and sentenced to 10 years, with restitution and asset forfeiture.
A 1:43 a.m. explosion at the Japanese ambassador’s residence in Lima shook the site as Tupac Amaru rebels who stormed the home on December 17 released a sick hostage. They claim mined grounds and backpacks with explosives, while 104 hostages remain. Kenji Hirata, a 34 year old diplomat, was aided by Red Cross workers and a bishop. The government has cut water, electricity and phone service to the residence as negotiations continue.
