Chlorine leak shuts Solvay plant for safety reasons
A chlorine gas leak at L.C.P. Chemical and Plastics in Solvay forced a temporary shutdown after a safety valve malfunction released about 200 pounds of gas. No serious injuries were reported though workers at nearby Crucible Steel were treated for eye irritation. Plant manager Ron Burkett said 150 employees were evacuated and authorities notified as the company investigates the cause. The site, part of a seven-plant operation headquartered in Edison, NJ, will remain closed until the cause is found.
