Upstate New York Works Progress Administration officials announced retention of the national WPA safety trophy for the second consecutive month with only one death in 49,970,000 man hours of work. The district reports the national average as one fatality per 577,000 man hours and notes a 3.6 percent drop in disabling accidents since September.
In wartime London life is marked by near misses and odd providences as civilians and reporters recount bomb blasts. Personal adrenaline stories recount dogs rescuing owners, a manager saving his wife during a bombing, and AP staff enduring a close strike while racing through blackout streets.
An urgent H E L P sign spelled with spruce boughs on snow directed pilots toward a remote cabin west of Anchorage Alaska. Pilot Rogan Dickson and a doctor flew toward the location to relay medical aid while Ray Peterson with eight passengers observed the sign after a man fled the cabin and torched a spruce to draw attention. Game wardens note such remote signals are not unusual among trappers and partners.
