Worker buried alive in Ithaca trench dies at scene
A 45-year-old Montezuma man, Jamies Garrigan, died Friday after being buried under 20 feet of earth while assisting with an excavation for a water main at a location near Ithaca. Garrigan, an employee of Central New York Hauling and Excavating, was alone in the trench when the walls collapsed. His body was recovered around 11:40 p.m. after more than 40 rescuers used heavy equipment and hand tools. Tompkins County deputies say an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
