California reforms welfare with mandatory work program
California officials report able bodied welfare recipients are entering a work program that pays wages through private and public sector jobs. In six counties 2,707 are classed employable, with 1,127 in private jobs, 230 in training, 184 in work experiences, and 271 removed for refusing work. The program aims to expand to 35 of 58 counties and reach about half of employable recipients.
