The government reported November unemployment at 6.9 percent, down from 7 percent, while the number of Americans with jobs rose by nearly one million, the largest monthly increase since April 1960.
A Pretoria magistrate ruled after a two week inquest that no person was criminally responsible for Steve Biko's death in police detention. The inquest found the brain injury occurred during interrogation on Sept. 7, while five security police officers were present.
Cloudy conditions return tonight with a low near 30 and a high around 40 tomorrow. A 30 percent chance of precipitation persists tonight and tomorrow as Hancock Airport forecasts vary clouds and a 30 percent chance of showers or snow flurries. Military officials said they are reconsidering a ban that bars women from the White House honor guard after five Air Force women complained to First Lady Rosalynn Carter. A decision on changing the rule will be reached by January 31, an Army spokesman said.
President Carter directed the Shippingport light water breeder reactor near Pittsburgh to increase from 90 percent to full power in a White House ceremony.
