A massive mudslide in Gothenburg swept away 40 houses in the Hisingen suburb, killing at least four people and creating a 3000 foot crevice. Rescue teams feared more bodies buried under debris as 45+ injured, 25 seriously, were taken to hospitals or emergency centers.
James Morgan 18 was found in Fenner Madison County after a four day search near Mutton Hill. Medical examiner Dr. Russell Lindauer concluded the cause of death was a self inflicted shotgun blast to the left chest fired at very close range.
In Cleveland, 11 of 28 junior high schools and half of the city’s 14 high schools closed as hundreds of teachers did not report for work until salaries are paid. The move affected about 19,000 students with some elementary pupils sent home as officials awaited further details. The NAACP planned court action to restore full operations.
