A one car crash on Route 57 in Liverpool early Thursday left Jeffrey Kooken dead and two passengers injured. Kooken, 28, from Arlington Circle East, died after his car struck a tree on Oswego Street at 2:30 a.m. Two passengers, Sharon Mahay and Robert Velez, were hospitalized. Mahay in stable condition at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital while Velez was in critical condition at State University Hospital. Contributing factors were high speed icy roads and no seat belts.
A silenced pistol shot killed Sheik Halim Takieddine 60, top Druse legal authority, in his West Beirut home. Police say a maid admitted the assailant, who fled as gunfire and threats sparked broader violence including a French soldier killed near the airport. Takieddine, a key moderate political figure, had urged Druse leaders to press for peaceful coexistence amid Lebanon’s civil war.
Nicaragua plans amnesty for prisoners jailed for crimes against state security and offers rebels a return home without punishment if they lay down arms. Diplomats and opposition leaders also expect a new program to repatriate Miskito refugees from Honduras and invest heavily in the Miskito region.
