A cold front approaches this evening bringing showers and a few gusty thunderstorms. Patchy dense fog forms after night. Saturday brings plenty of sun and a cool autumn feel for the holiday weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast from the Northeast to the Appalachians and the eastern Ohio Valley as a cold front moved east. Severe storms could bring lightning, hail, strong winds, and heavy rain in northern New York and northwestern New England, with heavy rain in Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. A 17,100 acre wildfire near Glacier National Park remained hard to control amid forecasts of strong winds. Fire officials warned of continued risk as 23 major fires burned across the West totaling over 226,000 acres. A Weaverville fire near Northern California was 75 percent contained after evacuations. Prosecutors charged a second man with murder in the deaths of two firefighting pilots.
