Samantha Smith dies in Bar Harbor Airlines crash

Samantha Smith, famed peace ambassador and 11 year old from Manchester Maine, died in a Bar Harbor Airlines crash near Auburn Lewiston Municipal Airport with seven others including her father Arthur. Officials opened an investigation into possible preflight fire and air traffic control communications.

Carbide plant reports quick containment of HCl spill

Emergency officials gave Union Carbide high marks for handling a second leak in two weeks at its South Charleston facility. The 8:30 p.m. spill at Blaine Island unit, caused by a gasket leak in the silicon unit, was contained in about an hour with no injuries or evacuations.
