Reagan says no public segregation in South Africa now
President Reagan told a Monday radio audience that racial segregation in South Africa's public facilities has been eliminated. He cited changes under the white-ruled government and his policy of constructive engagement. Protesters in South Africa planned a demonstration at Pollsmoor Prison for Nelson Mandela's release. Critics in Washington disputed Reagan's claims, noting limited progress and ongoing restrictions on black labor unions and property ownership.

Shoreham fails to win full license for reactor
The NRC ruled Long Island Lighting Co cannot obtain a full operating license for the Shoreham plant because the company did not prove it can evacuate residents in a nuclear emergency. Suffolk County opposes issuing an operating license and Gov. Cuomo welcomed the decision. The plant, begun in 1973, has faced billions in cost and opposition since inception.

Discovery launches on risky repair mission to Syncom satellite
Shuttle Discovery roared into a dawn sky from Cape Canaveral as rain and clouds threatened. Commander Joe Engle and pilot Dick Covey aimed to guide a five member crew through two days of maneuvering to approach the Syncom satellite and repair its failed timing by wiring across outlets. Astronauts James van Hoften and Bill Fisher would conduct the space walk to run the bypass cable while the shuttle also deploys three communications satellites. The mission follows a weather challenged, delayed launch, with a 70 foot bright flame tail lighting the morning and Engle noting a black cloud as the craft rose.
