Medflies spread to two new areas intensifying control efforts
A pesticide spraying helicopter operated over suburban Los Angeles as two fertile Mediterranean fruit flies were found in Baldwin Park, 260 miles south of prior limits, with another fertile specimen discovered in Oakland. Officials warn costs could reach 1 billion dollars if the infestation expands, while California projects year one losses and pest control could total 1.2 billion and 750 million in subsequent years.
